When any of us in our family come back from a trip, we generally bring back presents. I always come back with stuff for my family, closer friends, and coworkers (bc most likely they helped cover my shifts and generally speaking I like the bunch). In Japanese you may know this as #Omiyage, I am unsure of the translated terms for other countries.
In Tagalog it's Pasalubong.
In our family it is predominately:
Food we shouldn't be eating.
This time Uncle returned with #hopia,
(usual gift, also carries well)
#Tikoy
(I will get to that one in a minute)
and shortbread cookies from #Goldilocks
(a SUPER popular bakery franchise from the Philippines)
DISCLAIMER before we go further
I am like the least Filipino Filipino you will likely meet in all your lifetimes
BUT I love to eat.
So if I explain things, and you're thinking, #NotQuite: forgive me
I just want to share all the foods with everyone :)

So Let's start with the whole reason for this blog post
and the video
(which is/will be embedded below)
I woke up one morning and saw this on the table.

We don't make #Tikoy.
It went a little like this:
Me: thinking, 'did she fry a root I am unfamiliar with?'
Me: "Mom,... did you fry a root or something?"
*poking it*
Mom: "It's rice cake."
Me: "French toast rice cake?"
Mom:" Yea, you fry it in an egg..."
Me:" French toast rice cake."
Mom: "NO."
So
it comes in a block or circle
and you cut it up
fry it in egg mix/wash
TADA
Tikoy!
I had to google this.
aka #年糕 #甜粿
is generally a New Year's thing.
pronounced nián gāo
I met with a friend
and tried explaining it
since I wasn't sure if it was just a touristy last minute souvenir thing.
He mentioned he understood what I was TRYING to say
and it is generally something you eat during new year.
See video below if you are interested in that egg mix!

Next up:
Hopia.
Standard gift.
It would be weird to come back home from a trip to the Philippines and NOT have hopia in your luggage somewhere.
It's great bc I feel it isn't that bad of a snack for my parents to eat.
I mean, how bad is #mungbean for you?
I can't imagine it has any negatives.
They are filling, have a ton of nutrients and are delicious!
So Filipinos call it Hopia,
elsewhere it is refered to #bakpia.
Usually they are flaky pastries
round in shape
with a dense mung bean filling.
The fillings can vary, but usually it is mung bean.
In the Philippines mung bean has a few spelling variants #monggo o#mongo #mungo
and #taro is #ube.

Last but definitely not least
(bc Dad pretty much demolished them all LOL)
#Polvoron!

We used to have a Goldilocks in Houston
my poison of choice? #SansRival
LITERALLY: WITHOUT RIVAL
I will let you google that for independent study.
THAT will not carry well.
and I am more accustomed to it as a oval shaped flat cookie/biscuit
versus A HUGE cake (google shows you cakes)
IDK where uncle gets THOSE but I will inquire
BC now I want sans rival D:

Back to the topic at hand.
Polvoron and hopia are items your family looks forward to you bringing back.
Dad apparently ate all the little cookies aside from this little guy below
